ABOUT THE COURSE

English Literature has a long and prestigious history. This course provides us with an excellent education in literature, drama and film. The degree combines a flexible approach and wide range of option choices with extensive historical coverage. English Literature is a broad and accessible subject that is important in its own right and offers connections to a wide range of other kinds of cultural enquiry. This wide-ranging, fascinating degree course draws on a rich variety of texts and approaches, helping to reveal the extraordinary scope of English Literature and its importance in today’s world.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates for the admission to the first year Bachelor of English course shall require pass percentage in Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu/ other States

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester.The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

About the Department

The department of English is one of the oldest departments in the college, established in 1993. It was upgraded with Branch XII English in the year 2010.

The objective of the department is to help women, grow with confidence and to challenge the competent world through the education.

The department reaches out to all the students of the college through the Foundation Course in English and helping the students to become smart and efficient communicators. Besides, the Foundation Course in English, Soft-skills subject is been introduced by the University of Madras, to enhance the skills and face the challenging world with much confidence.

DETAILS OF DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES HELD FOR THE YEAR 2020 – 2021

EVENT 1 - INTER COLLEGIATE EVENT

The UG Department of English conducted the literary Fest, VIVITSA on January 7 th 2020. The Chief Guest of the day was Dr.N.Ramachandran, Former Professor and Head, Mohamed Sathak College, Chennai. A total of 88 participants from reputed institution in Chennai city took part in the events very enthusiastically. 5 On – Stage events and 3 off – stage events were organized and the overall trophy winner was students of Ethiraj College for Women.

EVENT 2

A Webinar on Harmony with Nature: The Emotional and Spiritual Bonding of the Primitives was organized on 20th June 2020. Dr .D.Rajkumari Assistant Professor, Department of English, Chellammal Women’s College was the Resource person. Dr.D.Rajkumari emphasized on the importance to live in harmony with nature, thereby to protect the environment and other living beings that inhabit on the earth. When mankind indulges to affect nature through pollution and deforestation, humankind will be forced to repent for generations.

EVENT 3

Event 3. Online Quiz – “Advanced test in Literature” was conducted on 21st& 22nd May 2020.

Event 3a. Online Quiz –“Brain Thugs” was conducted on 2nd – 4th June 2020.

Event 3b. National Level Online Quiz – Quizzical Quest was conducted on 8th& 9th June 2020.

EVENT 4

Teachers’ Capacity Building Programme was organized on 16th September 2020.Mrs. Beena Thomas, Associate Professor & Head PG & Research Department of English, Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College For Women & Chairperson Board of Studies in English (UG),University of Madras was the Resource Person. Mrs. Beena Thomas has highlighted the changes that are brought in the Branch XII English syllabus and its Learning Outcome of the Programme. The revised syllabus aims at providing a holistic understanding of the discipline and equips the students with life and transferable skills to pursue higher education and career. Besides the resource had emphasized about the students’ learning techniques, methodologies to be incorporated to teach various skills like reading, writing and different activities were suggested to infuse the passion for the programme.

EVENT 5

Webinar on “RECENT JUDGEMENTS ON COMPANY LAW” eas organized by the department of corporate secretaryship in association with IQAC, on 30th October, 2021. The Resource person was Ms.Rajashree Balaji, B.com., LLB., CS., CA., Senior Analyst, PriceWaterHouseCooper, Chennai. The session was interactive and all final year students (100 No.) were participated. One-Day Basic Training Program on “Educating Women in Cyber Stalking & Women Abusement” The Department of Corporate Secretaryship has organized One Day Basic training programme on “Educating Women in Cyber Stalking & Women Abusement held on 22nd March 2019, which is sponsored by National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi. The programme consists of four sessions. The Chief Guest for the inauguration session was Dr.R.Thilagaraj, Member Syndicate University of Madras who addressed the audience on “Awareness on Cyber Security”. Ms.S.P.Lavanya, Additional Superintendent of Police, Cybercrime Cell, and CBCID, discussed on “Women Harassment in Cyber Stalking”. Ms.Adhilakshmi Logamurthy, Advocate Madras High court, addressed the gathering on “Women Abuse-Safety and Security”. Mr. Haja Nazuridin, Senior Advocate, Chairman Disciplinary Committee, Bar Council Tamil Nadu, addressed on “Misuse of social media”. The participants received participation certificates.

REPORT - ONE DAY WORKSHOP HELD ON 4th JANUARY 2022

The UG Department of English conducted an One Day Workshop in collaboration with IQAC on the topic “Teaching-Learning ‘Word Art’ for Appreciating and Interpreting Literature”at our college on 4th January 2022. Dr.SUMATHI SHIVKUMAR – Assistant Professor -Department of English -A.M. JAIN COLLEGE was the Resource Person of the memorable day. The resource person gave a splendid introduction to the topic and later explained about the various components of the Literary Approach like Genre, Forms & Features, usage & identification of the different Literary Devices etc..

She envisioned a two dimensional view of UAI (Understanding-Appreciating-Interpreting) both as a writer & an earnest reader as well. Thereby many new ideas & suggestions emanated from the students & staff and were discussed in the forum. Number of participants are 85 from the Department of English.

Thus this conventional One Day Workshop enhanced and reinforced the learning process of literature, refreshed and left an indelible mark in the minds of all participants after the long suffered Pandemic period.

REPORT ON INTER - DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

Department of English organized Inter-Departmental activities on 2nd may 2022. The following competitions were conducted:

  • Oratorical
  • Debate
  • PPT Presentation
  • Creative Writing skills in the respective order.

The Oratorical Competition revealed the Fluency, Vocabulary, Diction and Time Management of the students.In Debate the argumentative skills, the reasoning and logical skills of the students were showcased.The PPT Presentation and Creative Writing Competition exhibited the creativity, clarity of ideas and the presentation skills were lime lighted.

Around 80 students from various departments of our college actively participated in the above mentioned competitions and prizes were awarded for the Winners to motivate them.

REPORT ON- GUEST LECTURE

A guest lecture on "OUTSIDE HISTORY: WOMEN AND WRITING ACROSS CULTURES" organized by Department of English in collaboration with IQAC on 11th MAY 2022.

The Resource Person, Dr.SUPALA PANDIARAJAN, Faculty of English, University of Madras focused on the texts and contexts of Canadian Literature clearly and conveyed the ideas about both Indigenous Australians and those descended from the European colonizers.

The twin identities of the Australian and Canadian Literature are perceived in their writings as a process of mutual understanding and reconciliation. Both students and teachers are widely exposed to various women writers and their writings across cultures in the male dominant society of those days. The resource person gave away the prizes for the winners of Inter-Departmental Competitions. The seminar ended with an active feedback session.

On 15th September 2022, the Department of English has organised a Guest Lecture on The Importance of Communication in Developing Personal life & Professional Career. Dr.Sudha Srikanth ,Soft Skill Trainer/Placement Officer, C.T.T.E College for Women, Chennai, has been invited as the Resource Person. The Resource person explained the importance of Communication skills, Probing Skills, Paraphrasing Skills and Interpreting Skills. Dr.Sudha Srikanth, threw lime light upon the ratio of Literacy Rate and Employment Opportunities. Nearly 180 students of UG-I Year attended the programme and the session came to an end with a valuable Feedback from the participants.

TOPIC: “Creative Writing”

>On 19th October 2022, the Department of English has organised a One Day Workshop on Creative Writing. The Resource Person opened up the Workshop with the importance of reading that leads to “Writing”. He explained the need for interpretation and imagination for creative story writing. Later the four main aspects of the story - writing such as character, plot, conflicts and messages are explained. The Seven elements of a story is also explained. At the end of the Workshop, activities are given to the students.The students interacted and enjoyed the session . The Resource Person Mr.Vignesh Siva Shankar made the session very lively through his presentation of slides and videos.
