About the Course:
English Literature has a long and prestigious history. This course provides us with an excellent education in literature, drama and film. The degree combines a flexible approach and wide range of option choices with extensive historical coverage. English Literature is a broad and accessible subject that is important in its own right and offers connections to a wide range of other kinds of cultural enquiry. This wide-ranging, fascinating degree course draws on a rich variety of texts and approaches, helping to reveal the extraordinary scope of English Literature and its importance in today’s world.

ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates for the admission to the first year Bachelor of English course shall require pass percentage in Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu/ other States

DURATION OF THE COURSE:

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester.The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

The department of English is one of the oldest departments in the college, established in 1993. It was upgraded with Branch XII English in the year 2010.

The objective of the department is to help women, grow with confidence and to challenge the competent world through the education.

The department reaches out to all the students of the college through the Foundation Course in English and helping the students to become smart and efficient communicators. Besides, the Foundation Course in English, Soft-skills subject is been introduced by the University of Madras, to enhance the skills and face the challenging world with much confidence.

Association Activities

The Department of English inaugurated the Literary Club – ‘MINERVA’ on 30th January, 2012. The Chief Guest Dr. M. Murali Ganam, Assistant Professor, D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, delivered a Lecture on the topic “The Role of Literature in the 21st Century”. On 27th Feb, 2012, Minerva Club organised a Seminar on the topic “The Significance of Communication Skills in Today’s Challenging World”, by Dr. Ms. Sudha Srikanth, Soft-Skill Trainer & Placement Cell Officer, CTTE College For Women. On 12th Feb, 2014, a Lecture was delivered on “So Good So Far: Future of Journalism” by Dr. T.R. Gopalakrishnan, Professor, University of Madras, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. He highlighted the wider and varied opportunities for Journalism and its growing demand in the media-centred community.

The Department of English held the inauguration of the Literary Club ‘Zenlitt’ on 30th September, 2014 in the College premises. Dr. V. Ganesan, Associate Professor, Department of English, AM Jain College, inaugurated the Literary Club and delivered the Lecture on “Post-Colonial Literature in English”. The Department took great interest in the inauguration of the Book Club. Dr. V. Meena Kumari, Associate Professor, Department of English, Anna Adarsh College For Women, inaugurated the Book Club and delivered a Lecture on ‘Journalism’, which was held in the month of February, 2015.

On 2nd, September, 2015, Mr. Sundar Ganesh, Director, Roja Muthiah Library, inaugurated the Club and delivered a Lecture on ‘Significance of Books’.
