DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

ABOUT THE COURSE:

The undergraduate program in Psychology is designed to meet the increasing demands for psychological understanding and application in diverse professional fields. The objective of this course is to scientifically study the behaviour and mental process of human beings and animals. The course is designed to enable students to think critically and creatively.

ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations (Academic or Vocational Stream) conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Syndicate of the University of Madras.

 DURATION OF THE COURSE:

Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters.  The first academic year shall comprise the first and second semesters, the second academic year the third and fourth semesters and the third academic year the fifth and sixth semester respectively. The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semesters from December to April of each year.  There shall be not less than 90 working days for each semester.
ACADEMIC PROGRESSION:.

The students have a wide knowledge of Psychological principles, relation between the nervous system and behaviour, experimental procedures, basic statistical techniques, developmental issues, application of psychology in various fields, research methodology, abnormal Psychology, organisational behaviour, health Psychology.  The department also facilitate students to blossom both in academics and non-academics activities so as to have a holistic development. 
CAREER PROGRESSION:

After successful completion of their course, the students of Psychology can pursue their higher studies in Counselling Psychology, Human resource management, Clinical Psychology, Applied Psychology, Sports Psychology, Special Education, Criminology, Social works, Cognitive Neuro psychology or they can endeavour for job opportunities.

The U.G department of Psychology is established during the academic year 2015-2016. The department has qualified and dedicated faculty members who strive for students excellence. In addition to academics, the students are also encouraged to take part in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The department also moulds the students to imbibe moral values and to develop an attitude to contribute to the needs of the society.

The department conducted an awareness program on Alzheimer on October 10th 2018 on World Mental Health Day.

  1. Charts which explains about the symptoms, causes, treatments and prevention of Alzheimer were displayed in the college campus.
  2. “Tips for prevention of Alzheimer”  were given to all departments.
  3. Students did documentary, skits, a mime, three famous personality talks about their experiences with Alzheimer, power point presentation, games and hung many memes  to create awareness about Alzheimer for the students and staff.
  4. A short film “The gusty Morning” was screened for the audience.

Stress relieving ball were given to all departments. Students of final year did flash mob to create awareness about Mental Health for the students
