M.Sc. Applied Psychology

ELIGIBILITY

B.A., or B.Sc., in Psychology. Any undergraduate course with Psychology as core paper or any UG program from Science, Arts and Humanities from any recognised university

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The course duration is about 2 years which includes 4 semesters with 2 semesters per year. Each semester has 90 working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

The postgraduate program involves a balance of course work, practical experience and research. Professional skills are nurtured and honed by exposure to field visits, onsite observership, internships and one to one mentoring skills. Students are trained to administer and interpret various psychological assessments in the areas of intelligence, personality, learning, memory, interest, aptitude and career test to name a few. Empirical research studies are conducted by students as part of the project in their final semester under the guidance of experienced faculty. In the applied psychology program, students can carry out their research work in various branches like health, developmental, clinical, counselling, social, organizational, sports and positive psychology. They are encouraged to present their findings in academic conferences or publish articles in academic journals. Experts from the various disciplines of psychology are invited to conduct workshops, seminars that enables the students to gain practical experience and knowledge. These experiences allow students to utilise their skills in real world setting and gain valuable hand- on experience.

CAREER PROGRESSION

The emerging field of Psychology has wider scope and job opportunities in the areas of guidance, counselling, teaching, training, research, neuroscience, forensic, clinical and disability rehabilitation. After post-graduation students can enrol in Post graduate programs of various specialisations, including M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes. A master’s in psychology leads to tangible careers in the field of mental health services, human resource management, health care, counselling and special education. NGO’S , Rehabilitation centres ,Prisons and child guidance centres recruit psychologist for counselling and rehabilitation of elderly people, children with conflict with law, drug addicts victims of domestic violence or any forms of abuse. Industries and Corporate sector recruit psychologist for personnel selection, training employees. Improving the employer –employee relationship and counselling the employees with social and emotional problems.

About the Department

Postgraduate program of Applied Psychology was incepted in the year 2019with the aim to provide sound theoretical knowledge, systematic study of behavior and mental processes and application of psychological principles in solving practical problems in several spheres of human activity. This program equips the students with analytical thinking, counselling skills, high level of communication skills and entrepreneurship skills for future professional endeavors. The laboratory is well equipped with adequate apparatus, questionnaires and psychological scales. The department provides sufficient reference books and journals for the students to update the knowledge in various branches of Psychology.

Department Activities

PG Department of Physics conducted an exhibition on “Comprehensive Understanding through the Experiments on 13.02.2023 @ PG Physics Laboratory from 10.00 a.m. Students from other science departments participated. An edition of “Inherent Radiance” – contributions from each and every one of the department was released by Dr.K.R.Dhanalakhmi ,Principal and Mrs.S.Mangai, Vice-Principal.

Event for the year 2020-2021

A webinar on the topic ‘Artificial intelligence coupled devices – The future health care’ was organised by the department of Electronics and Physics in association with IQAC. The invited speaker Dr. Alexander Vincent Paulraj Ph.D., Post Doctoral Researcher , Wolfson Centre for Personalized Medicine, University of Liverpool, England, United kingdom. The webinar was held on 23.12.2021. The invited speaker gave ideas to popularize the electronic sensors in the future healthcare.
