B.Sc. Biochemistry

ABOUT THE COURSE

The U.G. program in Biochemistry was established during the academic year 1994-1995. Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field that favourably complements other Biological and Physical Sciences. It seeks to describe the living world in terms of its Cellular and Molecular structures and transformations thereof. It deals with animals, plants and microbes both in health and disease states as well as their interactions at the molecular level.

ELIGIBILITY

HSC passed with Chemistry / Biology / Botany / Zoology / Biochemistry are eligible for admission.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester. The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

The students imbibe a wide knowledge in the fields of Enzyme Technology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Human physiology, Immunology and Nutritional Biochemistry. They are practically well trained in Clinical Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques with an additional training on hospital laboratory techniques which enhances the confidence levels within students. The students are also encouraged to take part in curricular, co- curricular and extracurricular activities which shapes them in their overall development.

CAREER PROGRESSION

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry allows students to enter the job market directly or go on to post graduation in Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Molecular biology, Cell biology, Clinical chemistry, Animal science, Nutrition, Plant science, or other Biomedical sciences and Biotechnology. Students may find job opportunities in biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies or government agencies, working in laboratory or Clinical research, quality control, production, information systems, marketing, or technical sales. Entry into other specialized professional programs like Biomedical engineering, Medical lab/imaging sciences are also possible.
