ABOUT THE COURSE

The UG program in Computer Applications is designed for students aspiring to excel in the field of computers and information technology. Due to increasing demand, the course is being offered in two Shifts: Shift I and Shift II in different timings. The course in Shift I and Shift II came into existence during the academic year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 respectively.

The course provides a sound knowledge in key areas of computer science and substantial understanding of concepts in the course curriculum. This teacher covers various subjects such as databases, networks, multimedia, operating systems and up-to-date programming languages. The students are trained to develop sound practical skills and professional competence in developing software.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Tamilnadu or any other examination considered equivalent by University of Madras are eligible with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (or) Accountancy, Commerce, Computer Science (or) Mathematics, Commerce, Accounts(or) Vocational group with Mathematics.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester. The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

The students acquire wide knowledge in the fields of Networks, Database Management Systems, Web Technology and Operating Systems. They are practically well trained in the latest programming languages which prepare them to be competitive in the IT industry.

CAREER PROGRESSION

After successful completion of their course, the students of Computer Applications can pursue their higher studies in Computer Applications, Computer Science, Information Technology or Business Administration or they can endeavor for job opportunities. They are well-equipped to work as professionals in the fields of software development, design and implementation.

About the Department

The U.G. The Department of Computer Applications was established during the academic year 2010 -2011. Due to increasing demand, the department offers the course in two shifts: Shift I and Shift II in different timings. The course in Shift I and Shift II came into existence during the academic year 2010 - 2011 and 2011- 2012 respectively.

The department has a well- equipped and up-to-date laboratory as per the curriculum. It also provides sufficient textbooks, reference books and journals to meet the students’ requirement. The department has a qualified and dedicated team of faculty members who strive for the students’ excellence. In addition to academics, the students are also encouraged to take part in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Department takes special effort to mold the students so as to equip them to meet the challenges of the IT world at a global level.

Department Activities for the year 2020-2021

The UG Department of Computer Applications & PG Department of Computer Science organized a International Webinar on "Data Engineering and Analytics" on 6th June 2020. The chief guest of the event was Mr. Karthikeyan Navaneethan, Deputy Vice President and Lead, Data Engineering and Data Platforms, Prudential Assurance Company, Singapore. Staff and Students were benefited through the information given in the webinar. Around 300 students have participated and E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

National Level E-Quiz on "Cyber Security" was organized by the UG Department of Computer Applications & PG Department of Computer Science on 1st June, 2020. Around 200 students have participated and E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

International Webinar on "Humanoid Robotics" was conducted on 23rd May 2020. The Resource Person of the event was Dr. A. Prema Kirubakaran, Associate Professor, Dept. of Computer Science, School of Computing Sciences, VELS Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies(VISTAS), Pallavaram, Chennai. The session was interactive and 200 students were the beneficiaries. E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

International Webinar on "Data Science" was organized on 20th May 2020. The Resource Person of the event was Mr. N. Arasu, Principal Data Scientist, Microsoft Corporation, USA. The session was interactive and more knowledgeable. Around 350 students were benefited from this webinar. E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

International Webinar on "Database Handling Using Python" was organized on 15th May 2020. The Resource Person of the event was Mr. M. Sampath, Assistant Professor, Dept. of CSE, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. The session was informative. Around 200 students were benefited from this webinar. E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

National Level "E-Quiz on Quantitative Aptitude 2020" was organized by the UG Department of Computer Applications & PG Department of Computer Science on 11th and 12th May, 2020. Around 200 students have participated and an E- Certificate was given to all the participants.

The "Intercollegiate Technical Symposium" and one day workshop on "Python Programming" was conducted on 24th and 25th Jan 2020.The Resource Person for the workshop was Mr. Abdul Cader, Project Manager and Mr. Vallavan, Senior Software Engineer, Openwave Computing Services Pvt Ltd. He conducted the webinar in a very effective manner. Participants benefited from this workshop.

Department Activities for the year 2020-2021

The inauguration of DigiMinds club of the UG Department of Computer Applications & PG Department of Computer Science was conducted on 25th July’ 2018. The chief guest of the event was Dr. S.P. Rajagopalan, Secretary, Bhaktavatsalam Memorial College, Dr. C.N.Eswari, Principal, Bhaktavatsalam Memorial College, presided over the function. The club members were introduced to the students of the department. The objectives of the club are to inculcate and motivate the students to enhance their skill sets in their domain. The students actively participated in various events such as PICTOWORD and QUIZ.

The second event of DigiMinds club was debate conducted on 17th Sep’2018, in the topic “INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM Vs. FORGIEN EDUCATION SYSTEM”, where the students of UG Department of Computer Applications and PG Department of Computer Science had eagerly participated. The judge for the event was Mrs. Indira, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Microbiology. She analyzed the student’s talent and judges their skills. The club members, the guests and audience together contributed to make the event a grand success.

Department Activities for the year 2020-2021

It was our pleasure to conduct the third event of DigiMinds on 19th Dec’2018. The session was conducted on Mock Interview, where the students gained knowledge about job interview. The Do’s and Don’ts for an interview was clearly explained along with a PowerPoint presentation. The session was handled by Mrs. Rita Poorani, Assistant Professor, PG Department of English, she was enthusiastically presented and motivated the students. The session was very useful for the final year students to build their career.

The resource person for this session was Mrs. Geetha Selvakumar, Professor & Head, PG Dept. of English, She conducted mock interview for the students regarding the nuances of placement and training.

Seminar on “Digital Business Trends & Technology and Career Implications”

The Departments of Computer Science, Computer Applications & Information Technology jointly organised a seminar on “Digital Business Trends & Technology and Career Implications” on April 27, 2022. The resource person, Mr. Arjun Shankar, Business and Education Consultant addressed around 150 final year students of the host departments on various aspects of the emerging trends in Technology in current business segments with real-time applications.. The session was very interactive and interesting which helped the students to prepare themselves for their career.

Seminar on “Building Products at Google”

As teachers and students have adapted to digital tools for online learning, the departments of Computer Science, Computer Applications & Information Technology invited Mr. Praveen Krishnakumar, Senior Product Manager for Google Search & Google Maps, Google Inc., Switzerland to deliver a seminar on the topic “Building Products at Google” on August 10, 2022 . The resource person shared his knowledge and expertise on the process of developing the various online tools by Google Inc., Switzerland. The session was interactive and useful for the target audience of around 200 students and faculty members.

Seminar “Term and Relation Extraction in Mathematical Texts using Natural Language Processing”

To provide research insights into the minds of the Post graduate students in the emerging areas of Computer science, an inspirational talk was delivered on the topic “Term and Relation Extraction in Mathematical Texts using Natural Language Processing” by Mr. Vaibhav Sanjay, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA. The session was well received by around 50 Post Graduate students.

Infrastructure

The Departments of Computer Science, Computer Applications and Information Technology are equipped with excellent, sophisticated computer laboratories with state-of-the art computing facilities and latest systems configuration. The UG and PG courses maintain separate labs with the student-machine ratio as 1:1. The labs accommodate around 150 systems which are fully networked and up-to-date software requirements, with respect to the curriculum, have been installed to cater to the needs of the students of the UG/ PG streams. Internet with Wi-Fi facility is also available in the laboratories. The students are given practical training in a variety of software to meet the challenges in the IT industry. In addition to the academic practicals, internet browsing, student marks/nominal roll entry as per the University’s regulations and soft skill training for the students of the college are also administe#35b6b7 through the computer labs.
