ABOUT THE COURSE

The U.G. program in Chemistry was established during the academic year 2013-2014. Chemistry is necessarily an experimental science: its conclusions are drawn from data, and its principles supported by evidence from facts- Michael Faraday.Chemistry is a branch of physical science that studies the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. The department is offering Mathematics and Physics as ancillary subjects to the students.The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters.

ELIGIBILITY

HSC passed with Chemistry / Physics / Mathematics / Biology /are eligible for admission. DURATION OF THE COURSE

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester. The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

CAREER PROGRESSION

The course in chemistry is useful for students in various aspects and offers them with bright career. There are a wide variety of Chemistry careers to choose from teaching to research and development. the field of chemistry is wide and diverse. Chemistry graduates are employed in industrial sector, government departments, health sector, research institutes, laboratories and academia. The options available for chemistry graduates are Chemist, Research Scientist, Analytical Chemist, Technical Officer, Product Development Chemist, Process Development Scientist, Quality Control Scientist, Materials Analytical Chemist, Patent Agent, Laboratory Technician, Teacher, Technical Writer, Forensic Technician/chemist, Pharmaceutical Development and/or Sales, Product Testing and Analysis. Chemists get jobs in pharmaceutical companies, petroleum companies, chemical industries, perfume industries, research organizations like ISRO, DRDO, Bhabha Atomic research center etc. The course helps students in improving their diverse skills in various areas such as laboratory skills, numerical and computing skills, ability to approach the problems both analytically and logically and time management skills.

About the Department

The department of Chemistry was approved by the university in 2013. The Department provides ample opportunity for the students to accumulate a thorough fundamental knowledge of all fields of Chemistry The main focus of the department is to instil the necessary spark and provide the scientific impetus so that the students can virtually experience the jiggling and wiggling of atoms and molecules. The Department enable students to have a glimpse of contemporary research, both in terms of academia and industry. Our aim is to produce knowledgeable graduates for pursuing careers with academia, industry and government.

The Department of Chemistry, Bhaktavatsalam Memorial College for Women, Korattur, Chennai- 80 in association with Indian Society of Analytical Scientists – Tamilnadu Chapter (ISAS – TN Chapter) had organized a webinar on “Raman Spectroscopy – Instrumentation & Analysis” on 7th June 2021.

Discussing from the basics she introduced the gathering to a wide spectrum of Raman Spectroscopy. The overall session was well appreciated by the participants and was very informative.

The laboratory experiences provide opportunities for students to interact directly with the material world using innovative instruments and technologies. The course mainly aims on an intensive introduction about the techniques of theoretical and experimental chemistry to the students. The chemistry lab is well equipped with latest version of instruments like digital conductivity meter, digital potentiometer, centrifuge machine, hot air oven, suction pump, Kipp’s apparatus, electronic and chemical balances, hot air oven and muffle furnace. The lab is highly ventilated and can accommodate 45 students. Students are given complete training on handling various apparatus and glasswares. Theoretical sessions are arranged for the students in preparing chemical solutions and handling of hazardous chemicals which will facilitate student’s research career in their higher studies. Students from other domains are also given hands on training in the chemistry lab as a part of interdisciplinary course offered by the institution.
