ABOUT THE COURSE

The Department of Commerce was established in the year 1993 to facilitate education for Women in rural area. The course imparts high quality education in the areas such as Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Banking, Human resource, Computer applications, Insurance and Taxation. It provides training and guidance to the students to meet the challenges in high positions like Managers, Accountant and company secretaries in Domestic and International Organizations.

The course helps the students to get wide knowledge about the recent developments in functional areas of Commerce and Industry. It also helps the students to learn self discipline and become a good citizen of the nation.

A pass in Higher Secondary examination or equivalent thereto (Arts / Vocational group) of any combination of subjects.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

Candidates for admission to the first year of the Degree of Bachelor of commerce courses, BBA and B.Sc. Information systems management shall be required to have passed the higher secondary examinations(Academic or Vocational stream) conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Syndicate of the University of Madras.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

The students imbibe a wide knowledge in the fields of which enhances the confidence levels within students. The students are also encouraged to take part in curricular, co- curricular and extracurricular activities which shapes them in their overall development. The candidates after obtaining Bachelors degree in Commerce can undergo the following courses for higher education.

About the Department

Our College has a team of highly qualified, experienced and skilled faculty members with the dedication to convert young students in to knowledgeable professionals having the required skills to avail appropriate and prosperous jobs in the corporate, research and teaching spheres. The faculty members not only respect the conventional methodologies of educating students in the field, but also stretch their limits to innovate effective methodologies that would impart hands on experiences in the practical aspects of their education.Due to increasing demand, the department offered the course in two shifts: Shift I and Shift II in different timings. The course in Shift I and Shift II came into existence during the academic year 1994-1995 and 1998 - 1999 respectively.

Department Activities

EVENT 1

PG & Research Department of Commerce conducted an Online E-Quiz on 30th May, 2020, enabling student to recollect the subject knowledge during the lock-down period. Twenty five objective questions related to financial services were framed in google form and it was circulated to students. 100 participants filled them and got E-certificates.

EVENT 2

A National level webinar on RESEARCH METHODOLOGY was organized by PG & Research Department of Commerce on 11th June, 2020. Dr. S. Ramachandra Murthy Director, ( Research & Development ) St. Peter's University, Avadi, Chennai was the resource person of the program. He explicitly described the various technologies and tools applied in Research Methodology and given an in-sight view of the report writing techniques. Very good feedbacks were received from the participants and they were provided with an e-certificate for participation.

Event 3

PG & Research Department of Commerce organized an International Webinar on “Strategic Approach to Overcome COVID-19 in Marketing Environment” on 13th June, 2020. The resource person was Mr. K. Venkatapathy Senior General Manager, WABCO Compressor Manufacturing Company,North Charleston South Carolina, United States of America. He had narrated the prevailing situations of marketing environment during the COVID period and also enacted the opportunities upcoming in the commerce arena. Participants from various colleges actively participated and received e-certificates.

EVENT 4

A National level webinar on “FUTURE PROSPECTS IN STOCK MARKET” was organized by PG & Research Department of Commerce on 17th June, 2020. Mr. Arul kumaran, Trading coach (shares & commodity ), soft skill Trainer was the resource person of the program. He gave a clear presentation on stock markets and also highlighted the future growth of the market. PG students and UG final year students were participated. Very good feedback were received from the participants and they were provided with an e-certificate for participation.

PG & Research Department of Commerce organized an National Webinar on “AN ENTREPRENEUR AFTER COVID 19 –AN OPPORTUNITY” on 16th June, 2020. He had narrated the prevailing situations of marketing environment during the COVID period and also enacted the opportunities upcoming in the commerce arena. EVENT 6

A National level webinar on “IMPACT OF TDS DUE TO COVID-19” was organized by PG & Research Department of Commerce on 20th June, 2020. Mr.N.S.BADRI NARAYANAN ,CA, ACA, MFM, Director MNC was the resource person of the program. He gave a clear presentation on tax deductions at various sources. PG students and UG final year students were participated. Very good feedback were received from the participants and they were provided with an e-certificate for participation.

  • The 2016 International conference by the PG & Research Department of commerce which was held on 3rd and 4th of March is all about “iconnect” “International conference on native economy commerce and trade “. This conference as we proudly say was a grand success and it paved way for many more ahead. It was a two days conference. We received nearly 120 papers in which 6 papers from International Universities and Colleges. Almost 60% of the papers were presented by the Research Scholars in person.
  • The inaugural was kicked off by 9.30 in the morning by the arrival of our esteemed Chief Guest Mr.CA.V.Murali, President, all India Institute of CA & Mr.S.Gurusamy, Head of the Department, Commerce, University of Madras. It was a remarkable one. There were five sessions chaired by esteemed academician’s viz., Dr.M.Ranganatham for Finance, Dr.Sakthivel Annamalai Manickam for marketing, Dr.R. Rangarajan for Entrepreneurial development, Dr.R.Thenmozhi for Human Resource Management and Dr.SM. Mohammed Ismail for Banking. All the sessions were easy street. It was very useful and productive to many of the Research person, faculties and students
  • The valedictory on the evening of second day upheld by Mr.Balaji K Moorthy VP, Marketing Ramco Cements India Ltd., as the chief guest and our beloved secretary sir Dr. S.P.Rajagopalan as a jewel to the crown and summed up all the credentials pertaining to the conference. It all concluded with a profound vote of thanks.

Department organized its second International Conference on Contemporary practices in Commerce, Business and Management . We received 5 International papers , 98 National & State level contributions. The main aim of the conference was to develop Research & Research related activities in the present day Scenario in the areas of Commerce, Business and Management

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITES

  • Dr.Thiyagarajan, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Pachaiyappa’s College for men was the resource person. The contents of the workshop were elements of measurement, data preparation, data cleaning, data transformation and data analysis. Descriptive statistics, testing of hypothesis, ANOVA, t-test, paired t-test, correlation and regression, factor analysis, cluster analysis and AMOS was discussed in detail.
  • Students have been encouraged to participate in the various intercollegiate competitions to exhibit their skills and talents. The students have actively participated in intercollegiate competition organized by various colleges and won prizes.
  • The department conducts a talent show/Role playing/Debate/Seminar which gives a platform for the students to express academic and non academic skills. The department conducts an ED Bazaar every year with the motive to spread awareness on self employment. GST Workshop Programme organized by PG & Research Department of Comerce about GST. Our resource persons motivated the students about GST Law, different from other Laws, how to maintain accounts & records and 3 parts of Ledgers, why it is necessary ? and motivate online information database.

ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The department conducts a talent show/Role playing/Debate/Seminar which gives a platform for the students to express academic and non academic skills. The department conducts an ED Bazaar every year with the motive to spread awareness on self employment.

The guest lecture on the topic “Guidance of effective writing of thesis” was conducted for the research students in the year 2014 by Dr.K.R.Sowmya, Professor, Department of Management Studies,Rajalakshmi Engineering college.

The content of the seminar encircled with perspectives of Humanity. He volunteered himself for burying unknown dead bodies and shared his experiences on it. He conveyed valuable messages to avoid suicide attempts by youngsters.

All the information that the resource person shared about the waste management was very motivating and he insisted on waste segregation , re-usable and recycling of products. He also gave gender awareness to our students. The whole session went on well.
